Do you see what is hiding?
The Minimalist Version
Check closely. This time with a fresh set of eyes. Things that are hidden in a cupboard or closet can no longer hide when they are placed on a table or counter to be sorted. Chances are you’ll find something that doesn’t belong. We’ve become complacent. Pulling EVERY item out will reveal the truth.
The Unedited Version
Recently a client asked me to assist with purging her kitchen. While going through a cupboard that held her larger plastic bowls, I noticed that front and center was a can of flea and tick powder for her dog. My first comment to her was that the powder did not and should not be in the same cupboard as her bowls. She indicated that it was okay to toss it since her dog had died several years ago. I asked her why she kept it and she said she hadn’t even noticed it. This was one of many things she could no longer SEE amongst the clutter.
This is why it is important to pull items out and place them in a separate area. Things that are hidden in a cupboard or closet can no longer hide when they are placed on a table or counter to be sorted.
The same is true in the opposite. For example, if you are going to purge your plastic containers, then you must make sure to check every nook and cranny for any hidden plastic containers. There is nothing more frustrating than having pared down and organized a group of things only to find out you’ve sorted just half of it.
